Three thoughts from the day…

-In my opinion, national signing day is one of the most over hyped days of the year in sports. It’s a shame ESPN and so much of the sports media’s attention turns to these high school athletes on this day. Most of whom either flunk out, get injured or are just not good enough at the next level. Because of this unnecessary pressure, kids like Kevin Hart feel the need to please others and make up stories. Don’t get me wrong, the decision to even attempt this sort of feat is nothing short of idiotic. But if national signing day just went about like basketball’s national signing day, where only college students and the die-hards know about the “prospects”, high school athletes wouldn’t see the need to respond to this type of pressure.

-I was watching yesterday’s The Best of Mike and Mike, and they brought up a very interesting point that I would like some reader feedback from. This year’s Super Bowl got the highest ratings in Super Bowl history and according to the numbers, about half the nation’s households and t.v. sets were tuned in. Mike and Mike’s question was what was the other half of the nation doing? Some of their listeners responded with the typical “I don’t really follow football” answer. While others responded with “I was kayaking” or “I was watching Circus Soleil”. So dear readers, if you didn’t watch the Super Bowl, what were you doing? And if you did catch it, what would have made you miss it? For me personally, it would’ve taken a death or a birth to not have seen it. And even then, I probably would’ve peaked into every hospital room just to see this…

Reality

-Honestly, I’ve always thought the Vick dogfighting scandal was really blown out of proportion. If an athlete did something like that in any other country, nobody would’ve give a damn. Maybe that’s because I’ve never really been a pets person… Of course, I’m not going to go out and start killing animals for fun but mostly because I just don’t like killing things in general. But people really to calm down about their animals… I wouldn’t be suprised to find out if PETA was behind 80 percent of the cases against Vick. But anyways, Pedro and Hall of Fame pitcher Juan Marichal are in this video of cockfighting, yet this doesn’t even crack the top stories on ESPN’s MLB page.
